[STATEMENT] The 1st Anniversary of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration Between Cambodia and Thailand
The 1st Anniversary of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration Between Cambodia and Thailand: Toward Sustainable Peace and Rebuilding People-to-People Trust
Phnom Penh — Today, October 26, 2026, marks the 1st anniversary of the issuance of the “Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration between Cambodia and Thailand” (October 26, 2025 – October 26, 2026)—a historically significant diplomatic milestone in preserving peace and stability along the border regions of both nations.
The spirit of this agreement continues to serve as an indispensable guiding compass for Cambodia in resolving border issues peacefully, transparently, and in accordance with the foundations of international law. On this one-year anniversary, I would like to reiterate my sincere gratitude and appreciation to President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for their steadfast commitment and constructive, fruitful facilitation.
For this historic declaration and accord to yield tangible and enduring results, we earnestly urge the governments of both nations, international partners, and all stakeholders to continue extending their political will and technical support to the practical implementation process on the ground.
Concurrently, the Cambodian Institute for Democracy (CID), as an independent civil society organization, remains fully committed to actively contributing to trust-building and the revitalisation of people-to-people relations. Historical experience clearly demonstrates that genuine, sustainable peace cannot rely solely on diplomatic documents; it must be deeply rooted in mutual understanding, mutual respect, and sincere collaboration between the peoples of the two neighboring nations.
