CID IN THE MEDIA

Why media engagement matters

For CID, media engagement is not about visibility alone. It is a core pathway for impact, learning, and accountability. Since our establishment in late 2019, the Cambodian Institute for Democracy has worked deliberately with national and international media to ensure that evidence, analysis, and civic perspectives inform public debate and policy discussions in Cambodia.

Our impact

  1. A trusted public voice: CID’s President, Chanroeun Pa, has been interviewed and quoted more than 1,000 times across local, regional, and international media platforms. This reflects sustained trust in CID’s analysis on democracy, human rights, governance, freedom of expression, and civic space.

  2. Policy-relevant discourse: Media engagement has allowed CID to bring complex issues into accessible public conversations, ensuring that citizens, policymakers, and development partners engage with facts rather than speculation.

  3. Amplifying civic perspectives: By speaking consistently and responsibly in the media, CID helps elevate civil society voices, particularly on sensitive or shrinking civic space issues that are often underrepresented.

  4. International visibility: Coverage by regional and global outlets has connected Cambodia’s democratic challenges and aspirations to wider international audiences, reinforcing the importance of global solidarity and accountability.

What we have learned

  1. Credibility is cumulative: Long-term, consistent engagement grounded in evidence builds trust more effectively than reactive commentary.

  2. Clarity matters: Media audiences respond best when complex democratic and policy issues are explained in clear, practical language.

  3. Dialogue over confrontation: Constructive framing creates space for discussion even on politically sensitive topics.

  4. Media as civic education: Interviews and commentary are opportunities not only to inform, but to strengthen public understanding of democratic values and rights.

Looking ahead

CID will continue to invest in ethical, responsible, and strategic media engagement as part of our broader mission. Our goal remains clear: to contribute to informed public debate, support freedom of expression and press freedom, and strengthen democratic dialogue in Cambodia through thoughtful analysis and learning-oriented communication.
